Symphony Orchestra In Newport, Oregon
The Symphony Orchestra in Newport, Oregon, charts a new course this season,
during which the orchestra will appear under the baton of the four finalists for
the position of artistic director and conductor.
The season will wrap up with a
special program on April 7 led by NSO associate conductor David Ogden Stiers.
All concerts are at 7:30 p.m. at the Newport Performing Arts Center. A
pre-concert talk precedes each concert at 7 p.m. Prokofiev's Symphony No. 7 will
be on the program with other works to be announced. Stiers will appear, schedule
permitting.
The finalists were chosen in a highly competitive process by
a search committee consisting of members of the board of directors, orchestra
musicians, and community members. In order of appearance with the orchestra, the
finalists are William Intriligator of Dubuque, Iowa; Glen Cortese of New York
City; Adam Flatt of Denver, Colo.; and Elizabeth Stoyanovich of Bremerton, Wash.
Each will conduct one concert, performing a program of their own choosing. The
final decision will be made shortly after the last of the four appears with the
orchestra in Feb. 2007.
The season, the symphony's 18th, begins on Oct.
14 with a program of Glinka, Shostakovich, and Tchaikovsky. Conductor William
Intriligator currently serves as music director and conductor of the Dubuque
Symphony Orchestra and has led performances with distinguished orchestras
throughout the U.S., including those of Honolulu, Houston, Minnesota, Richmond,
Saint Paul, Savannah, and Tulsa. He has conducted at music festivals in Aspen,
Colo., and in Astoria. He earned his master's and doctoral degrees in conducting
at the University of Minnesota. A native of Santa Monica, Calif., Intriligator
received numerous awards and accolades as an oboist before turning to
conducting. The concert will also feature cello soloist Rajan Krishnaswami of
Seattle, who will join the orchestra for Shostakovich's Cello Concerto No.
1.
Glen Cortese, conductor of the Nov. 11 concert, is the artistic
director of the Western New York Chamber Orchestra, the Oregon Mozart Players,
and the New York Chamber Sinfonia. He was resident conductor of the Florida
Philharmonic for the 2001-02 season and completed 12 seasons at the Manhattan
School of Music where he was principal conductor and director of orchestral
studies from 1988-2000. Cortese covered as assistant conductor to the New York
Philharmonic from 1990-92 for Zubin Mehta and Leonard Slatkin, among others. His
work at the Manhattan School of Music included the school's debut performances
at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center and City Center. His NSO program will include
works by Tchaikovsky, Copland, Mahler, and Stravinsky (the Firebird Suite). New
York-based Mezzo soprano Emily Johnson will perform with the orchestra on this
program.
The Dec. 9 program will be conducted by Adam Flatt, who has been
the Associate Conductor of the Colorado Symphony Orchestra in Denver for the
past five years. Flatt's past engagements include the Oregon Symphony (where he
served as staff conducting apprentice for two years), San Juan Symphony and
Chorus, Monterey Symphony and Chorus, Cascade Festival Orchestra, and the Oregon
Ballet Theatre. He has been broadcast on the National Public Radio program
"Performance Today," and Colorado Public Radio's "Colorado Spotlight." A native
of Sacramento, Calif., Flatt has his bachelor's degree from the University of
California at Berkeley. He has chosen a program of Haydn, Respighi, Saint-Saëns,
and Brahms. Violin soloist Erik Peterson of the Colorado Symphony Orchestra will
perform Saint- Saëns' Havanaise for Violin and Orchestra with the
orchestra.
Elizabeth Stoyanovich, conductor of the Bremerton Symphony in
Bremerton, Wash., will lead the orchestra in its Feb. 17, 2007, program.
Stoyanovich is also currently music director of the Butte Symphony Association
and education conductor of the Fresno Philharmonic Orchestra. She served as
staff conductor for the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra where she lead educational
concerts and served as music director of the Cincinnati Symphony Youth
Orchestra. She completed a successful tenure as assistant conductor of the
Pacific Symphony Orchestra in Calif. while also serving as music director of the
Pacific Symphony Institute Orchestra and the Pacific Symphony Orchestra Youth
Orchestra. Works will include a piece by the conductor's husband, Patrick
Stoyanovich, as well as Beethoven and Rachmaninoff. Pianist Judith Cohen will
perform Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2 in C minor.
"We are very
excited to present this series of concerts and outstanding conductors to the
community," said Tom Hurst, BAY Music Association board president and artistic
director search committee chair. "We received more than 80 applications for this
position, and we managed to narrow the field to these four outstanding
candidates. We look forward to input from our patrons as we make this difficult
choice," he added. "Last season, all of the Symphony's concerts sold out. We
hate to disappoint people, so I'd suggest buying season tickets before the first
concert."
The artistic director search has been funded by a grant from
the Kinsman Foundation. The Newport Symphony Orchestra is supported by the City
of Newport, Coast Arts, and various foundations, businesses and individual
donors.
Season tickets are available at the Newport Performing Arts
Center box office, and by calling 265-ARTS. Season tickets are $140 and $100,
depending on seats. Individual tickets are $32 and $20 for adults and $10 for
students. Oregon Coast Council on the Arts members receive ticket
discounts.
Season begins Oct. 14

conductor at 7 p.m.
The concert program will include works of Glinka
(Overture to "Russlan and Ludmilla"), Shostakovich (Cello Concerto No. 1), and
Tchaikovsky (Symphony No. 6 in B minor, "Pathétique"). Seattle-based cellist
Rajan Krishnaswami will join the orchestra, playing the solo part in the
Shostakovich work.
Patrons will be invited to meet and talk with
Intrilgator after the performance in the Performing Arts Center
lobby.
Concert tickets are available at the Performing Arts Center box
office and by calling 265-ARTS. Individual tickets are $32 and $20 for adults
and $10 for students. Season tickets are still available. Oregon Coast Council
on the Arts members receive $1 discounts on individual tickets.
