Experience The World In Newport Oregon With Culture Shock
The Culture Shock Festival, a program of the Oregon Coast Council for the
Arts
It is scheduled for Friday and Saturday, Sept. 29 and 30. Obo
Addy and Okropong will perform at 7:30 p.m. Friday, and the festival continues
Saturday with the Culture Shock bazaar and entertainment all day.

Opening
the festival on Saturday with a drumming ceremony will be the Ashay Rhythm
Troupe. Returning will be festival favorites Shannon Rackowski and the music and
dance of Hawaii; Chayag, featuring Alex Llumiquinga with music of the Andes; and
The Nettles, with their Celtic Music.
Shannon Rackowski not only brings
smiles and Hawaiian music and dance to the Silverman Stage, but also passes on
some of the traditional dances to the audience. Audience members are invited to
watch a moving performance, and then try the moves themselves.
Alex
Llumiquinga brings with him traditional instruments from Ecuador, including the
haunting pan pipes.
Other activities during the day include a Festival
Bazaar with art, artifacts, and food including Chinese, Mexican, and desserts
from around the world.
Internationally certified Natural Henna Artists
Lynn and Laura Getner will be setting up shop for Baraka Body Art: Temporary
Tattoos with Henna as part of the festival. Advanced appointments for Saturday,
Sept. 30.
Festival sponsors include Mo's Enterprises, Rogue Ale, Peter
Heisler, Aquarium Village, and Jambo World Crafts, Hallmark Resort, Scanners,
Park Motel, Oregon Coast Council for the Arts, and the City of
Newport.
The Friday performance of Obo Addy and Okropong at 7:30 p.m.
features festival seating with tickets priced at $5 each. Tickets are available
by calling the Performing Arts Center Box Office at 265-ARTS.
