How to Prevent Bullying in School

By Carl Lafresnaye

Bullying in school happens more often than most of us realize. Hundreds of school children go through different types of abuse and humiliation that many of them are traumatized for life.

Fortunately, bullying in school can be stopped. You as a parent can make a lot of difference in lives of school children in your community by actively participating in the drive to stop bullying in school.

Getting Started

Many schools all over the country have programs that help children cope with bullying in school. Parents, teachers and school administrators are encouraged to participate in this program to help each other solve the problem of bullying. The good thing abut joining this program is that you get to meet with other parents, students and school officials to work with them on finding solutions to bullying.

In the event where your child’s school does not have a program to help prevent bullying in school, you may suggest to the school administration that they set one up. Go the school principal and that the school needs to actively involve the parents and the students to prevent cases of bullying. Volunteer to help organize the group so that the school will not have an excuse of not doing this because they do not have anybody who will do all the ground work.

Plan and Execute

To start organizing your anti-school bullying program, you need to set a clear goal and direction of your campaign. Outline your strategies on how to organize the group and what will be its functions. You can solicit ideas from the school administration and parents regarding this matter. Ask the school administrators to help you send out letters and emails to parents and other individuals who may be interested to join in the campaign against bullying in school. Tell other parents that you need their help in protecting the children in school against the harmful effects of bullying. Explain to them that they too can make a difference in the lives of these children by simply participating in the program.

Don’t be discouraged if you get a lukewarm response in the initial stage of the program. Sometimes it takes time to get you message across to the parents and the people in the community. If you do not get good response at first, keep on trying. If the people around your see how determined you are to prevent bullying in school, many of them will be interested in following your lead.
