What surveys says about bullying

By Sandy Jones

Bullies are found in all walks of life, all nationalities, all religions, they are everywhere. The task of finding bullies can be undertaken with surveys. There have been uses of surveys to help us understand how common bullying is today. If you are a teacher or a boss, should you conduct a survey to find out if bullying is a problem? If you happen to be in charge of others, and you have received complaints of bullying, then a survey is one way to investigate the extent of bullying.

Bullying Surveys: Determining the Extent of Bullying In the Workplace

Cases of bullying in the workplace vary from place to place. There are some factories and construction sites that reported very high cases of bullying as compared to upper echelon law firms that reported very few incidents of any form of bullying. If you happen to be the human resource manager of a company and you have been receiving complaints of bullying in the workplace, it would be a good idea for you to investigate the extent of such activities. Always remember that the unreported cases are usually a lot higher than the reported ones. A lot of people either do not recognize the fact they are already being bullied by their colleagues or they simply do not want to report the incident because they do not want to get anybody into trouble.

In a survey taken by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development of 15,000 students in grades 6 through 10 in both public and private schools it was found that school bullying is very widespread. The findings were that of approximately 1.7 million children in grades 6th through 12th , one in every five students admistted to bullying, more than ten percent said they 'sometimes' bullied others, and nine percent addmitted to bullying others 'once a week.' Some surveys taken in the workplace have shown that 30 percent of the people who took the survey had been bullied by bosses or other workers, and some even quit their jobs because of it. Shooting rampages in both the workplace and school have been on the upswing. There have been surveys that show bullying has been a leading factor in many of these cases.

Conducting Bullying Surveys

As the human resource officer of the company, you need to know how bad the bullying situation in the workplace is. Acting on the complaints filed by the employees is good but it may not be enough in the long run. Note that for every person who files a complaint for bullying, there are at least two people out there who are too scared or too embarrassed to file a complaint. Many employees do not report cases of bullying to the human resource department because they are embarrassed to be victims of something commonly related to a school playground.

Surveys taken to find out how pervasive the problem of bullying is, are proving to be better than individual reporting's of incidents in that bully surveys protect the anonymity of the victims who may be fearful of being exposed to more harassments. They also might just be embarrassed, either way the survey is a good method. Two different methods of surveys are the individual survey where each person is given a definition of bullying that shows how different aggressive actions are bullying. Then they are asked if they have either been a victim or have been a bully to someone else. The other is a survey that also gives the definitions and actions of a bully but it is more anonymous and asks if they want to nominate someone else who they have observed being a bully. The second method has shown itself to be better than the first in exposing the workplace bully or school bully.

To address the problem of bullying in the workplace, you must have a clear picture of the extent of bullying. The best way to assess the situation is to conduct anonymous bullying surveys in the company. The good things about conducting this type of bullying surveys is that the employees will be able express themselves better. According to studies, people are better able to talk about their experience during this type of anonymous surveys as opposed to meetings and emails.
