Teaching Children not to be Bullies By Sandy Jones
It is so important to teach children that bullying is wrong at a early age, but it is never to late to educate against bullying when it is observed. Many children have been bullied before they even enter school. The examples at the home level may be that bullying is ok. The teacher maybe the only hope some children have of learning that bullying is not acceptable. Having a anti bullying game plan before hand is crucial. As a teacher there are many resources about bullying and the effects of bullying that you can use, or you may develop your own anti bullying plan.
If you are developing your own anti bullying program, it is important that you realize the it will be easier for children to grasp the anti bullying lessons if you use symbolism that is easy to understand. Role playing, or acting out different bullying scenarios with the use of puppets will help younger children grasp the meanings that you are trying to impart to them about bullying and the effects it has on people.
Assessing the level of your students comprehension should be the first step in formulation of your anti bullying program. There are some anti bullying plans already formatted for younger children that you might get some ideas from. Using puppets for young children and surveys for older children has been shown by surveys to yield good results.
The newspaper headlines of school rampages and shootings are becoming more commonplace. Setting up anti bullying plans and programs have never been as timely as they are today. Do not hesitate to start implementing anti bullying policies, plans, and programs in your school today to teach that bullying is unacceptable. The negative effects of bullying are the cause of depression and even suicide in some victims. If your school has a anti bullying support group you could use that as a resource to teach why bullying is wrong and just what bullying is. If you do not have a anti bullying support group, it might be time to start one.
