Bullying * Bullying
Does your child have a teacher that is a bully? By Sandy Jones
The Bully teacher
Just because a teacher utters a hurtful word, doesn't make them a bully. Teachers are human and make mistakes like everyone. There could be various reasons that some teachers bully: They might suffer from personal problems, job burnout, or trouble in their personal lives, and they may be taking their frustrations and anger out on the class. It is also possible that they might actually be envious of a very bright student, or a student might remind them of someone they dislike. Fear of bullying students might also be a factor that causes them to 'act tough'. A interesting study has shown that teachers that have been bullied in their childhood have learned from early experiences to respond with force, and recreate that in their classroom. Bullying for any reason should not be tolerated, there are other ways to deal with life than bullying others.
The Two Types of Bullying Teachers
The two types of bullying are; The sadistic bully who will take pleasure in the harm they cause, hopefully this type of bully is rare because they can cause the most damage of all. The other type of teacher bully is the victim-bully type. This type is a unorganized person who does not set boundaries and then when things get out of hand they go into a angry rage and write out referrals and more referrals, letting the principal handle their problem students. Both bullying types have one thing in common, they affect negatively the student-victims who are powerless in the face of the authority figure. While the Sadistic Teacher needs to be weeded out, and prevented from teaching, unless they are able to change, the victim-bully teacher can be taught better management skills and ways to deal with their class. Both types are dangerous and need to be stopped.
What Can You Do About Bullying Teachers ?
There are several ways to deal with the teacher bully types, just remember that verbal bullying causes as much damage as physical bullying does. Neither should be tolerated and both need to be stopped as soon as possible. Listening to your child when they talk, ask questions when you see unexplained changes in their behavior,or grades. A unwillingness to go to school, or sudden outbursts of emotion, whatever the symptom is be on guard to prevent potential bullying problems from teachers or anyone in authority who can harm our children. If your child tells you that they have been abused by their teacher bully you need to tell them you will help by talking to the teacher. If they are old enough to accompany you, let them. Do not confront the teacher in a hostile manner, but instead ask for their help in solving the problem. If you strongly suspect that the teacher is a bully and they are rationalizing their behavior, you need to go to the principal. If there is no help there, you will need to go further up the chain of command until you get the help that you and your child need. The school environment can become a nightmare to the powerless student who falls victim to the bullying teacher. Stopping bullying on all levels will stop most of the drop outs, school shootings, and suicides that have been caused by bullying. Did you know that studies have shown that half of the teachers who teach have bullied children at one time or another ?
