Boiler Bay Intertidal Research Reserve is situated between Boiler Bay State Wayside and Fogarty Creek State Park. Below are three picture of Boiler Bay at different times
Boiler Bay itself is actually a cove, not a bay. The site extends for 2.7 miles along the shoreline. There are a variety of intertidal habitat types that are ideal for marine research. Boiler Bay is a mix of boulder fields, bedrock platforms with surge channels, and small sand beaches.
Prominent features are: a diverse rocky intertidal environment, a pinniped haulout, seabird colonies, and kelp beds. Rocky platforms are used as pinniped haulouts. The shoreline cliffs support a number of smaller seabird nesting colonies. Subtidal bull kelp beds extend along much of the shoreline, indicating the existence of nearshore reefs. The reefs support a significant commercial fishery for red sea urchins.
Boiler Bay has diverse rocky intertidal habitats and an unusually diverse community of intertidal plants and animals due to the variety of substrate types and wave exposure regimes.
